- The foundation of experience for William R. McAdams was established through his father, Robert W. McAdams. After receiving his entomology degree in 1950, Robert W. McAdams worked as a union carpenter in the city of Chicago for seven years. In 1957 he finally found a job in entomology and was hired by the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a nursery stock inspector.
- Dedicated to the discipline of science he quickly developed into one of the top inspectors on his staff and later was considered one of the top inspectors in the Midwest. He was a firm believer in continuing education, field training, and workshop meetings. He was a board certified entomologist (Entomological Society of America) and a board certified Arborist (International Society of Arboriculture). He also was one of the founders of the Central States Horticultural Inspection Society. On a regular basis he attended the annual meetings of the Entomological Society of America, International Society of America, and Horticultural Inspection Society (Central Chapter).
- Robert W. McAdams, was, and still is, regarded as an icon throughout the nursery industry, particularly in the central Midwestern states. He held an aura-like appeal with others...that even if people weren't interested in plants, insects, or diseases....they soon were learning about them...and afterwards....were happy that they had learned. After his passing in 1997, he was nominated and awarded the Carl Carlson Award, which is a nationally recognized award for outstanding field performance and achievement.
The inspectors forte for the Horticultural Inspection Society (Central States) is: "Make professionalism a part of your every effort".
